Hello folks, its been a while since i posted anything….., so here comes a new interesting concept for you all to read called as Li-Fi.
According to wikipedia , Li-Fi is a bidirectional, high speed and fully networked wireless communication technology similar to Wi-Fi. Coined by Prof. Harald Haas, Li-Fi is a subset of optical wireless communications (OWC) and can be a complement to RF communication (Wi-Fi or Cellular network), or a replacement in contexts of data broadcasting.
Well that is quite mouthful, what’s this actually means is that Li-Fi technology uses light to transmit data over the network unlike Wi-Fi which uses radio frequencies to transmit data over the network. Thus,Li-Fi comes under the category of Optical wireless communication while Wi-Fi comes under the category of RF (Radio frequency) communication.
This technology uses light from different LED sources to transmit networked high-speed communication just like Wi-Fi. Scientists have field tested Li-Fi and have proven results of achieving speeds 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. Earlier this year, scientists have achieved a mind-blowing speed of 224 gigabytes per second (Gbps). Li-Fi works on the concept of visible light communication (VLC).
Visible light communication works by switching light on and off within nanoseconds to transmit data within a small range which is invisible to naked eye. Li-Fi is small range technology as light cannot penetrate through walls which makes it more secure as it can’t be hacked through long networks unlike Wi-Fi which is much less secure than Li-Fi.

• Li-Fi is wireless and uses same 802.11 protocols.
• Li-Fi market has a growth rate of 82% from 2013 to 2018 with an estimated projection of $ 6 billon by 2018.
• Direct line of sight isn’t necessary to access the network, the light reflected through walls can feed you with an estimated speed of 70 Mbps.
Li-Fi technology was invented by professor Herald Hass, from University of Edinburgh, which extract the idea of using light bulbs as internet network routers to transmit data over networks.
Li-Fi resolves critical issues related with Wi-Fi, for example:
Capacity: Li-fi has physically more capacity to transmit data over a range than Wi-Fi.
Availability: Li-Fi has more availability than Wi-Fi as we have plenty of light resources around us that can be used as Li-Fi routers.
Scalability: Li-Fi is more scalable than Wi-Fi because of plenty of resources that can transmit light.
Security: Li-Fi is more secure than Wi-Fi as it is short range and cannot be easily penetrated.
So, Let’s prepare ourselves for this new technology that is going to create a huge impact on our lives and fill this globe with high speed data.
